### Council of the Frost Gate

The late-autumn wind has begun to bite off the sound, driving sea spray against the outer bar and rattling the alder branches above the path. Inside the landing hall, the central hearth burns warm, but the thick cure-smoke lingering in the high rafters shows that living and curing together indoors requires care.

I gathered Del, Ves, Ruan, Kiri, Seli, and Wen around the hearth stones to set our work for late autumn.

"The harvest is gathered, the roofs are tight, and High Barley knows we come with open hands and respect," I said. "Now the cold winds are upon us, and winter is a month away. We will secure our hall against smoke and frost, pull our boats beyond the reach of storm tides, establish an honest trade at the stream cairn, and tally every sack and fillet that will carry our hundred and fifty through the dark months."

### 1. Hall Winterization, Ventilation, and Fuel (Wen & Work Crews)

* **Smoke Baffles and Hearth Draft:** With curing fish and daily heating filling the landing hall rafters with heavy smoke, Wen will oversee the installation of adjustable wattled smoke louvers beneath the roof vents. These angled hurdle flaps can be set according to the wind direction to draw smoke out cleanly through the eaves without letting driving rain or squalls dump cold air directly onto the floor.
* **Insulation and Draft Defenses:** Work crews will bank earth, cut sod, and weave dense reed screens along the windward exterior base of the landing hall and family dwellings. Doorways will be hung with double-layered mats weighted at the hem to cut cold draughts.
* **Fire Safety:** With hearth fires burning constantly and dunnage lofts filled with split wood and cured fish, Wen will ensure a clear three-foot stone and gravel border is maintained around all hearth pits. Fresh-water buckets filled from the well will stand ready near the doorway at all times.
* **Fuel Gathering and Seasoning:** Before late-autumn mud freezes solid or snow blocks the alder trail, teams will haul seasoned deadfall from the lower alder woods and dry driftwood from the inner beach. All gathered wood will be split, stacked on raised skids off the wet ground, and shielded under extended lean-tos. Each evening, two days' worth of logs will be staged inside the hall near the hearth to drive off moisture before burning.

### 2. Stores, Tally, and Tidal Foraging (Ves)

* **Pre-Winter Storehouse Audit:** Ves will conduct a full, itemized inventory of all winter provisions: sacks of barley meal, bundles of dried split fish, cured roots, and sea-salt crocks. She will establish a measured rationing baseline calibrated for our 150 people to ensure our food lasts through the cold months without sudden shortages.
* **Moisture and Pest Rotation:** Stores on the split-timber dunnage will be inspected twice weekly. Sacks and bundles will be rotated to prevent damp spots from forming near interior walls. Any root or fish showing surface moisture will be trimmed and boiled into the daily hearth pot immediately.
* **Tidal Shelf Foraging:** On days when winds make boat travel unwise, shore teams will scour the sheltered inner rocky shoreline and gravel bars at low spring tides. We will harvest mussels, limpets, whelks, and edible kelp to provide fresh protein and stretch our cured stores without risking lives on the water.

### 3. Boat Winterization and Inlet Fishery (Kiri & Ruan)

* **Hauling Out for Winter Gales:** With late-autumn winds building and dangerous swells pushing against the bar, both fishing boats will be hauled entirely out of the water onto greased timber skids on the high inner beach, well above the reach of the highest storm surges.
* **Craft Maintenance:** Kiri will inspect the hulls for worm or rot, clean off growth, and treat the seams and planking with tallow and heated pitch before freezing cold sets in. The boats will be lashed down to ground stakes and sheltered under thatched hurdle covers to protect the wood from frost splitting.
* **Outer Mooring Safeguard:** The re-rigged outer mooring line will remain buoyed and weighted with its sound sinker stone, but no boat will be left moored unattended during late-autumn squalls.
* **Opportunistic Inshore Netting:** If clear, calm slack days occur, Ruan may launch a single craft with an experienced crew to shoot nets strictly within the sheltered hook of the inlet. At the first sign of rising whitecaps or falling pressure, the boat will return and be winched back onto the skids.
* **Indoor Tackle Work:** On rough days, Ruan's net crews will work around the hearth twisting fresh cordage from bast fibers, carving wooden net floats, and repairing torn mesh for the coming spring.

### 4. Bounded Barter at the High Barley Ford (Del & Seli)

High Barley received our embassy courteously and affirmed peace, but made it clear that their boundary is the stream ford. We will honor their boundary scrupulously—good neighbors are made by respecting fences.

* **The Delegation:** Del and Seli will lead a party of four to the stream ford during a clear weather window, carrying a modest trade pack. They will not attempt to cross the stream, but will halt at the stone cairn marked with the woven willow ring.
* **The Barter Proposal:**
  * Del will hail ford watcher Jun and invite the elders to the water's edge for a formal trade council across the stream.
  * Del will thank them for their courteous welcome and propose a regular, neutral **Ford Exchange** held at the cairn on the full moon of each month, or signaled by a single smoke fire at the meadow's edge when travel permits.
  * **Our Offer:** Clean coastal sea-salt (valuable for preserving their winter meat and seasoning goat fodder) and prime wood-smoked fish.
  * **Our Request:** In exchange, we seek upland barley grain (to supplement our meal stores), raw wool or woven goat-fleece (to provide winter blankets and warm clothing against coastal frosts), or cured hides.
  * We will conduct a trial barter on the spot using the sample goods brought by Del's party, allowing both sides to weigh and inspect items across the stepping stones without either party crossing into the other's territory uninvited.
* **Inquiries:** Del will also ask Jun and the elders whether Del's remembered traveling basket menders commonly pass through High Barley before winter, or if any other coastal or mountain communities trade along the upper paths.
* **Boundary Discipline:** Under no circumstances will our people cross the water or press past the willow ring unless explicitly invited by High Barley's leadership.

### 5. Community Morale, Health, and Personal Leadership

As the days shorten and our world contracts to the landing hall and the inner beach, maintaining purpose and good spirits is essential.

* **The Hearth and the Well:** Wen will ensure the fresh-water diversion ditches remain free of autumn leaves and ice debris, keeping our drinking water clean. She will keep hot herbal decoctions simmering by the hearth for anyone coming in from the wet.
* **Hospitality Watch:** If unexpected travelers or itinerant menders arrive at the inlet before winter seals the trails, Del will enact our established law: shelter and a warm hearth-meal on their first night; in the morning, an honest offer of shelter in exchange for mending work or winter labor, or travel rations and a peaceful farewell.
* **My Station:** I will work alongside the village daily:
  * Helping Wen construct and fit the roof smoke louvers to ensure the hall remains breathable.
  * Assisting Kiri with the tallow and timber skids on the beach, mastering the knots and woodwork that protect our craft.
  * Sitting with Ves at night to review our supply ledgers by firelight, ensuring our people know their leadership is watchful, steady, and prepared.

Through careful storekeeping, secure boats, respectful trade at the ford, and a warm, well-ventilated hearth, Ternhaven will meet the winter frost with quiet confidence.
